TECHNOLOGY VS COMPONENT

The Technology Library LiDAR page explains perception concepts. This page covers buyable scanners, specs, sourcing, and stack compatibility.

A laser-based range sensor that measures distance by timing reflected light — producing scan lines or point clouds for perception, mapping, and safety fields.

LiDAR shoots laser pulses and measures how long they take to bounce back — like echolocation with light. That builds a map of distances around the robot so it can avoid walls, people, and obstacles.

Time-of-flight or phase-shift ranging produces 2D scan profiles or 3D point clouds. Spinning multi-beam units trade power and mechanical complexity for density; solid-state and flash units trade FOV and range for reliability. Safety laser scanners are functionally distinct from navigation LiDAR — certified for personnel detection, not interchangeable without engineering review.

Builds range maps of the environment, detects obstacles, supports SLAM and localization, and (on safety-rated models) defines personnel-protection zones.

2D scanning LiDAR

Single-plane laser sweep — dominant for indoor AMR navigation, obstacle avoidance, and mapping in flat environments.

3D spinning LiDAR

Multi-beam rotating units producing dense point clouds — common on outdoor robots, AV R&D, and mapping-heavy platforms.

Solid-state LiDAR

No spinning mechanics — MEMS, OPA, or flash architectures; reliability and form factor advantages with tradeoffs in FOV and range.

Flash LiDAR

Illuminates a scene in one burst — compact modules for short-to-medium range 3D where scan rate and simplicity matter.

OPA / FMCW

Emerging chip-scale and frequency-modulated approaches — watch for robotics-qualified SKUs vs automotive-only programs.

Safety laser scanners

Certified personnel-detection fields (PLd/SIL class) — wired to safety PLCs; not interchangeable with navigation-only LiDAR.

Urgency summary

LiDAR failures on navigation-critical fleets are rarely fixed by generic same-day parts — model, driver, safety class, and mounting must match first.

Check stock and shipping live before ordering.

  • →What range and FOV does the stack require at current speed?
  • →What interface and driver does your compute platform use?
  • →Indoor or outdoor install?
  • →What IP rating and vibration environment?
  • →Is ROS 2 driver verified for the replacement model?
  • →Safety PLC configuration required?

Non-negotiable specs

Before you order

  • →Record failed unit model and firmware revision
  • →Confirm driver package on target compute image
  • →Verify cable and connector compatibility

  • →Check lead time — 3D units rarely ship same-day

After arrival — bench test

  • →Bench-test point cloud or scan profile before remounting
  • →Re-run extrinsic calibration to base frame
  • →Verify map quality on known test route
  • →For safety: run certified field validation procedure

If you get it wrong

  • →Navigation stack fails or drifts — robot unusable
  • →Safety field gap — personnel risk and compliance failure
  • →Compute overload from denser point cloud than stack expects
  • →Outdoor unit failure from sunlight within days of install
